Simple Gravity Wall Dam Gate

Posted in Gravity Dam by Walter on February 5, 2012 8 Comments

A quick description of how Gribben goes about solving an inclined gravity wall hydrostatics problem. This is not the simplest way to solve such a problem but the method is transferable to round dam gates. Youessentially draw a free body that includes not just the inclined wall but also the water wedge above it. You then use the concept that area x thickness (1′ out of board) give you volume and volume times unit weight gives you the weight of the water wedge. You then also do a standard hydrostatic calculation for the vertical water face (remember the triangular pressure distribution). Do it yourself and try to rightclick on a face to get the area…SUITE…life of Zack and Cody

Hello Brother, Ok, If you are talking technically. then why Supreme court’s judgement on 2006,allowed to rise water level of 142 . Also it stated Dam is Strong enough to 142 water level. that 2006 judgement was based on complete technical survey only. did they took this decesion to kill peoples? are you beleaving that?. or the team assemlebd by supreme court are not trusted tech personals? think twice. One thing you will slowly understand this is your politicains game.

Approximately 5 million people living around and much below the Mullaperiyar Dam “may be considered as the bravest group of human beings in the world for living there peacefully even while knowing that they will be washed away in less than 2 hours by the powerful water to the sea, if the weak dam fails at any time in the near future” — according to Wikipedia

  • Tim:

This is one of the only Dam still standing in the world which is Gravity Dam type made using Lime Stone and Surkhi. Now more than 110 years old holding around 15 TMC (Thousand Million Cubic) of water at almost 1 Km above sea level.Idukki dam has a capacity of holding 70 TMC water and 79% of it is already filled. Hence it won’t be able to hold the water coming from Mullaperiyar and it would also collapse leading to a flood of enormous magnitude which would wash away four districts of Kerala.

  • Bruce:

Dont play with lives of people. Tamil people are worried about lives of Tamil in Sreelanka or any other part of world but not about fellow human being in India.. what a pity.

Kerals govt and people already said ‘ water is for Tamil nadu and safely for kerala’ we dont need any water.

or let dam break and kill keralites and eventually kill tamils by drought and lack of water.
new dam will help people from both kerala and tamil nadu

@karthijais try to believe experts(IIT team for eg:) not politicians. Kallanai is 15 ft tall made of unhewn stone anicut (bund) while Mullaperiyar is 176 ft tall composite gravity dam made with limestone and surkhi (a mixture of crushed brick, sugar and quicklime). comparing 15ft and 176 ft?!!! mullaperiyar is in earthquake prone area(zone 3).and located 881 m (2,890 ft) above mean sea level. Just imagine the force if dam break with 10 TMC water +muds + .. ..30 lakh people will die.

  • Christopher:

We are ready to live below this Dam as you said.Because already we tamil people live very near “KALLANAI dam” in tamil nadu which is 1500 yrs Old built by King Karikalan.Even tamilnadu govt spending less money compared money spending for Mullaiperiyar dam. We spent nearly 20 crore to strenghthen this dam since 1970 but that That dam not required this maintenance and we did it due to pressure form Kerala govt, because Dam is fine.Your new proposed dam is just 140feet.

  • Milton:

you are talking like gud people okay fine. we are the peoples of hospitality. you are troubling our poor and innocent peoples we will never illtreat anyone at the same time we will never giveup our rights, why this is happening dear…….. thankyou my bro & sis….. we love malayalies more than ourselves….. if you have any doubt means ask your people who are living here otherwise come and live with us. did you heard the statement given by ur people frm erode…

  • Howard:

    Dear Angry Tamil Brothers/Sisters,
Don’t believe this video or any other other video/news papers/ politicians.
If you are so much confident about the Dam, please come and live below the dam area. Then only you realize the truth . I am sure you will runaway

let the Dam break and kill 35 lakhs people by water r and kill Tamil people in due to drought…. then only you guys open your eyes and believe. After that there wont be ..See you all in swargam /narakam …/or in Arabian sea
